The U.S. Department of State has officially launched its online passport renewal system, making it available to all U.S. citizens with expired passports issued in the last 15 years. Initially released as a beta in June 2024, the system is now fully operational and can be accessed anytime.
Who Can Renew Online?
To renew your U.S. passport online, you must meet these requirements:
- Be at least 25 years old
- Live in the U.S. or its territories
- Have a 10-year passport that was issued within the last 15 years
- Possess an undamaged passport that is at least 9 years old
Additional restrictions:
- Only regular passports (not diplomatic or special passports) can be renewed online.
- You can’t change your name, gender, or birth details during the online process.
- Payment must be made via credit card, debit card, or ACH transfer.
- You need to upload a new passport photo.
- You cannot travel internationally for at least 8 weeks after submitting your application, as your current passport is immediately canceled once the renewal is accepted.
If you don’t meet these requirements, you must renew by mail or in person.
How to Renew Online
To apply, create a MyTravelGov account via login.gov. If you don’t already have an account, sign up with your email, choose your language (English, Spanish, or French), and complete the verification process. You’ll also set up multi-factor authentication for security.
Can You Renew Passport Cards?
Yes, you can renew both passport books and cards online. Passport cards, which look like a driver’s license, are for land or sea travel to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, but are not valid for air travel. You can renew whichever document you currently hold.
